SS201 Stainless Steel Material Guide

Overview

SS201 (AISI 201 Stainless Steel) is an austenitic stainless steel belonging to the 200 Series Stainless Steel Family. It was developed as a lower-cost alternative to 304 stainless steel by partially replacing nickel with manganese and nitrogen.

SS201 offers good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, attractive appearance, and high strength. Due to its cost-effectiveness, SS201 is widely used in decorative applications, kitchen equipment, furniture, construction materials, appliances, and general industrial products.

Compared with SS304, SS201 has lower corrosion resistance but higher yield strength and lower material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is SS201 stainless steel?

SS201 is a low-nickel austenitic stainless steel developed as a cost-effective alternative to SS304.

What is SS201 used for?

Typical applications include:

  • Decorative Panels
  • Furniture
  • Kitchen Equipment
  • Household Appliances
  • Architectural Components
  • Stainless Steel Fabrication

Is SS201 food grade?

Yes. SS201 can be used for many food-contact applications. However, SS304 is generally preferred for commercial food processing and long-term food contact.

What is the difference between SS201 and SS304?

PropertySS201SS304
Nickel ContentLowerHigher
Corrosion ResistanceGoodExcellent
CostLowerHigher
Outdoor DurabilityLowerBetter

Is SS201 magnetic?

In the annealed condition, SS201 is generally non-magnetic. Cold working may induce slight magnetism.

Can SS201 rust?

Yes. Under humid, chloride-rich, or coastal environments, SS201 may develop surface rust more easily than SS304 or SS316.

Is SS201 suitable for outdoor use?

For dry inland environments, yes. For coastal and marine environments, SS304 or SS316 is recommended.

Can SS201 be welded?

Yes. SS201 offers good weldability using TIG, MIG, and resistance welding methods.

Is SS201 cheaper than SS304?

Yes. Due to its lower nickel content, SS201 is typically 15–30% less expensive than SS304.
