SS430 Stainless Steel Material Guide

Overview

SS430 (AISI 430 Stainless Steel) is a ferritic stainless steel belonging to the 400 Series Stainless Steel Family. It is one of the most widely used non-hardenable stainless steels, offering good corrosion resistance, excellent formability, attractive surface finish, and cost-effectiveness.

Unlike austenitic grades such as SS304 and SS316, SS430 contains little or no nickel, making it a more economical alternative for decorative, household, automotive, and appliance applications.

SS430 is widely used in kitchen appliances, architectural trim, automotive exhaust systems, washing machine drums, refrigerator panels, decorative components, and industrial equipment.

Compared with SS304, SS430 provides lower corrosion resistance and weldability but significantly lower material cost.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is SS430 stainless steel?

SS430 is a ferritic stainless steel known for its good corrosion resistance, decorative appearance, magnetic properties, and low cost.

What is SS430 used for?

Typical applications include:

  • Home Appliances
  • Kitchen Equipment
  • Decorative Panels
  • Automotive Trim
  • Architectural Components

Is SS430 magnetic?

Yes. SS430 is fully magnetic because of its ferritic microstructure.

What is the difference between SS430 and SS304?

PropertySS430SS304
Corrosion ResistanceGoodExcellent
CostLowerHigher
Nickel ContentNone8–10.5%
MagneticYesNo

Can SS430 rust?

SS430 resists rust well in indoor environments but may corrode in coastal or chloride-rich environments.

Is SS430 food grade?

Yes. SS430 is commonly used in kitchen appliances and food-contact applications, although SS304 is generally preferred for commercial food processing.
